Maintenance Supervisor - Ammonia Refrigeration

Primary Objective

This role is responsible for leading and overseeing the daily operation, maintenance, and reliability of the facilities industrial ammonia refrigeration systems. The Maintenance Supervisor serves as a working leader, coordinating repairs, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance while actively supporting a team of ammonia refrigeration technicians. The position partners closely with maintenance, production, and quality teams to ensure refrigeration systems operate safely, compliantly, and reliably to support 24/7 plant operations. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and oversee daily ammonia refrigeration operations
  • Lead, mentor, and actively support a team of approximately 10-12 ammonia refrigeration technicians
  • Coordinate troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance activities for ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local ammonia refrigeration regulations and codes
  • Promote a safety-first culture and maintain clean, organized mechanical and work areas
  • Apply refrigeration expertise to install, start up, and commission refrigeration equipment per specifications
  • Partner with production, quality, and process maintenance teams to support continuous plant operations
  • Maintain accurate work orders, logos, and documentation related to maintenance, PMs, and PSM requirements
  • Support and execute Process Safety Management (PSM) programs
  • Collaborate with vendors and inventory teams to manage parts, supplies, and contractor support
  • Support team development through training, cross-training, and knowledge sharing
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager

Preferred Background

  • Experience supervising or leading maintenance teams in an industrial or food manufacturing environment
  • Strong working knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems and regulatory compliance
  • Familiarity with Frick refrigeration controls, compressors, and ice-making systems
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and refrigeration issues
  • Experience working cross-functionally with production, quality, and engineering teams

Qualifications

  • GED or equivalent (required)
  • Associate's degree in a technical field (preferred, not required)
  • Refrigeration-related coursework, certification, or formal training (preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with industrial ammonia refrigeration systesm (or related field)
  • RETA or CIRO heavily preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of maintenance leadership or supervisory experience

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work safety in hot, cold, and wet conditions (approximately 35°F–100°F)
  • Ability to lift up to 40lbs. regularly (50lbs. occasionally)
  • Ability to stand, squat, climb, and work up to 12-hour shifts
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and performing elevated work when required
